Being a podcast host/interviewer

I am a host of the New Books in Science podcast, part of the New Books Network. In each episode, I interview the author of a recently published book and we discuss its contents, as well as the writing process behind it. Currently online are episodes about Jackie Higgins’ Sentient: How Animals Illuminate the Wonder of Our Human Senses and Maia Weinstock’s Carbon Queen:The Remarkable Life of Nanoscience Pioneer Mildred Dresselhaus.

What a Cloned Ferret Means for Species Conservation

On December 10th, 2020, the currently endangered black-footed ferret species welcomed a novel addition: a clone kit named Elizabeth Ann. It shares its DNA with a long-deceased wild one, Willa, whose genetic makeup has been preserved as skin cells in San Diego’s Frozen Zoo since the mid-1980s. Elizabeth Ann represents an astonishing triumph in preserving its kind, and we explore how cloning work and what impacts it has on biodiversity.

My experience being evicted from harvard’s campus in march - business insider

At 9 a.m. on Tuesday, my roommates jumped on my bed and told me the news: an email had just announced that we'd have to leave campus by 5 p.m. on Sunday. I didn't fully process the consequences until many hours later. 55% of undergraduate students at Harvard are receiving some financial aid — and 20% are fully covered by it. At Harvard College, there are around 800 international students currently enrolled from 103 countries.

Interview with Alex Lahey for whrb 95.3 Cambridge

When you were a kid, there was always that one badass gal who ruffled your hair when passing by, with her guitar case, jean jacket and shades - I knew I had seen Alex Lahey before. She’s got that cool older sibling aura, the charisma of a rockstar and the calm of a seasoned musician, all perfected and tied together with a proud Australian accent. She is on tour, promoting her second album “The Best of Luck Club”, and I am meeting her before her concert at the Great Scott in Allston, on August 25, 2019.

Narrative essay on the studies of mouse whiskers

Jake Gable has been studying the whiskers of deer mice for 6 years now, has been part of multiple projects and has done enough research and experiments to write a series of books - a young expert in the field. But his biggest focus has been their length. Deer mice are split into forest mice and prairie mice, and with virtually no other differences, the forest mice have longer whiskers. What determined such a discrepancy in the whisker length of these populations? And which gene is responsible for it?

Interview with god is an astronaut’s Torsten Kinsella

Original titans of the instrumental post-rock and metal scene, God is An Astronaut have had an interrupted reign, debuting in 2002 with “The End of the Beginning,” and are known for their immersive sound, complex instrumental and cohesive story-telling. The project is led by twin brothers Torsten and Niels Kinsella. Their ninth album, Epitaph, came out in 2018 and has sent the band on a tour across Europe and North America. In anticipation of their Boston concert, I made a call to Dublin and asked Torsten Kinsella some questions.  (Audio available soon ♪)
